Writer insurance

Writer insurance: protect books, articles, and content from claims.

The short answer

Writer insurance from CreatorSure covers books, articles, scripts and copy. Media liability pays for your defense when someone says your writing defamed them, invaded their privacy or copied their work. Fight Back helps pay for a lawyer when someone steals your writing or uses it without permission.

Every book and article stays out there for years. Author insurance covers the claims that come with them.

What it covers

What writer insurance covers

Two halves, one quote. Media liability for when someone comes after you. Fight Back for when you need to go after them.

  • Defamation claims over memoir, nonfiction and articles
  • Privacy claims from real people in your stories
  • Copyright claims over quotes, lyrics and images you used
  • Claims from clients over freelance and ghostwritten work
  • Fight Back for stolen or pirated writing

The risks

Risks for authors, ghostwriters, and freelance writers

  • Memoir and nonfiction. Real people who don't like how they're written.
  • Fiction based on real people. A character who's recognizable.
  • Ghostwriting. Claims over a book with someone else's name on it.
  • Self-publishing. No publisher's lawyer reading first, so self-published author insurance matters more.
  • Freelance copy. Client content that makes claims about competitors.

Fight Back

Fight Back for stolen work or unauthorized use

Most insurance waits for you to get sued. Fight Back helps pay for takedowns, demand letters and a lawyer to go after people who take your work. It's for theft you find after your policy starts.

Pirated books

Your book shared or sold without permission.

Copied articles

Writing republished under someone else's name.

Lifted text

Your words in someone else's product, course or ad.

False claims about you

Lies that cost you contracts or readers.

Proof of insurance

Proof of insurance for publishers and clients

Publishers, agencies and corporate clients sometimes require writers to carry coverage. Once you're covered, CreatorSure sends a certificate of insurance to anyone who needs it.

General liability

Does general liability cover writers?

General liability, or GL, is the policy lots of small businesses buy. One part of it, Coverage B, is for personal and advertising injury. For an ordinary business, like a plumber, that part typically covers defamation claims.

Writing for publication is publishing, so that part is usually limited or excluded for writers. This is called the media exclusion, and GL doesn't address claims over your content the way media liability does.

Book author liability insurance is media liability, built for claims over your words. Keep GL for physical accidents (CreatorSure covers general liability too and will place it alongside your media liability), and add media liability for your content.

Cost

Writer insurance cost

There's no flat price, and we won't guess at one here. Your writer insurance cost depends on what you write (memoir, nonfiction, fiction, client copy), how you publish, your revenue, the limits a publisher or client asks for, and your claims history.

CreatorSure builds the quote around you, so you're not paying for extras you don't need. See what moves the price, then request a quote for a real number.
