Photographer insurance

Photographer insurance: get covered for client work and content claims.

The short answer

Photographer insurance from CreatorSure covers the images, not only the camera. Media liability pays for your defense when someone says a photo used their likeness without a release, invaded their privacy or infringed their work. Fight Back helps pay for a lawyer when clients or strangers use your images without a license.

Your gear is easy to insure. Your images are where the claims come from.

What it covers

What photographer insurance covers

Two halves, one quote. Media liability for when someone comes after you. Fight Back for when you need to go after them.

  • Likeness and release claims from people in your photos
  • Privacy claims over street, event and wedding photography
  • Copyright and trademark claims over art, logos or property in frame
  • Claims from clients over how images were used
  • Fight Back when others use your images without a license

The risks

Common claims against photographers

  • Releases. Editorial work that turns commercial without a model release.
  • Weddings and events. Guests who object to how their photo was used.
  • Property in frame. Art, tattoos, buildings and logos.
  • Captions. A true photo with a caption that paints someone falsely.
  • Composites. Images built from other people's work.

Fight Back

Fight Back when clients or others misuse your images

Most insurance waits for you to get sued. Fight Back helps pay for takedowns, demand letters and a lawyer to go after people who take your work. It's for theft you find after your policy starts.

Unlicensed use

Brands and sites using your photos without paying.

Clients going past the license

A client runs your images beyond what they paid for.

Photos sold as someone else's

Your work on stock sites or prints under another name.

Credit stripped

Watermarks cropped out and reposted.

Proof of insurance

Proof of insurance for clients and brands

Wedding venues, brands, agencies and event organizers often ask for a certificate before a shoot. Once you're covered, CreatorSure sends one to anyone who needs it. Freelance photographer insurance and wedding photographer insurance both come with it.

General liability

Why general liability often fails photographers

General liability, or GL, is the policy lots of small businesses buy. One part of it, Coverage B, is for personal and advertising injury. For an ordinary business, like a plumber, that part typically covers defamation claims.

Photography that's published or licensed can fall into the publishing group, where that part is often limited or excluded. This is called the media exclusion, and GL doesn't address claims over your content the way media liability does.

General liability is built for a guest tripping over a light stand, not a claim over the image. CreatorSure covers gear too (ask for it on your quote). Keep GL for physical accidents (CreatorSure covers general liability too and will place it alongside your media liability), and add media liability for your content.

Cost

Photographer insurance cost

There's no flat price, and we won't guess at one here. Your photographer insurance cost depends on the kind of work you shoot (weddings, commercial, editorial, street), your revenue, where your images get published, the limits clients ask for, and your claims history.

CreatorSure builds the quote around you, so you're not paying for extras you don't need. See what moves the price, then request a quote for a real number.
