Production house insurance

Production house insurance: coverage for films, video, and client work.

The short answer

Production house insurance from CreatorSure covers what your company makes and delivers. Media liability pays for your defense when someone says a film, commercial or client video defamed them, invaded their privacy or used their work. Fight Back helps pay for a lawyer when someone pirates or reuses your productions without permission.

You deliver the final cut. Production company insurance covers the claims that come after it ships.

What it covers

What production house insurance covers

Two halves, one quote. Media liability for when someone comes after you. Fight Back for when you need to go after them.

  • Defamation and privacy claims over films, commercials and branded video
  • Copyright claims over footage, music, art and stock in your edits
  • Trademark claims over titles, logos and products on screen
  • Claims from clients over deliverables
  • Fight Back for unauthorized use of your productions

The risks

Risks production houses face

  • Client briefs. A client's claim in your script is still your production.
  • Clearances. Music, footage and art licensed for one use and run in another.
  • Releases. People on camera without a signed release.
  • Documentary and unscripted. Real people who object to how they're shown.
  • Subcontractors. Freelance editors and crews who bring in material you didn't clear.

Fight Back

Fight Back for unauthorized use of your productions

Most insurance waits for you to get sued. Fight Back helps pay for takedowns, demand letters and a lawyer to go after people who take your work. It's for theft you find after your policy starts.

Pirated releases

Your film or series shared or streamed without permission.

Footage reused

Clips from your productions in someone else's project.

Client overuse

A client running your video past the license.

False claims

Lies that cost you clients or a distribution deal.

Proof of insurance

Proof of insurance for clients and distributors

Distributors, streamers, broadcasters, brands, agencies and festivals ask for E&O proof before release or before a job starts. Once you're covered, CreatorSure sends a certificate of insurance to anyone who needs it.

General liability

Why general liability often fails production houses

General liability, or GL, is the policy lots of small businesses buy. One part of it, Coverage B, is for personal and advertising injury. For an ordinary business, like a plumber, that part typically covers defamation claims.

Production companies are often treated as broadcasting or publishing businesses, so that part is often limited or excluded. This is called the media exclusion, and GL doesn't address claims over your content the way media liability does.

CreatorSure covers production equipment and a production package too (ask for them on your quote). Keep GL for physical accidents (CreatorSure covers general liability too and will place it alongside your media liability), and add media liability for your content.

Cost

Production house insurance cost

There's no flat price, and we won't guess at one here. Your production house insurance cost depends on the kind of work you produce (commercial, documentary, scripted, branded), your revenue, where it's distributed, the limits clients and distributors ask for, your clearance process, and your claims history.

CreatorSure builds the quote around you, so you're not paying for extras you don't need. See what moves the price, then request a quote for a real number.

FAQ

Production house insurance FAQ

Do production houses need insurance?

Yes. Distributors and most brand clients require media liability, often called E&O, and every production is content someone can object to. Media liability covers those claims.

How much does production house insurance cost?

It depends on your work, revenue, distribution, clearances and the limits you need. CreatorSure tailors a quote to your company. Request one to get your number.

Is video production insurance the same as E&O?

E&O is the media liability part. Video production insurance often also means equipment and production coverage. CreatorSure covers all of it and will place it together.

Does it cover work we make for clients?

Yes. Tell us about your client work when you request a quote and CreatorSure will place a policy that covers your deliverables.
