Podcast insurance

Podcast insurance: protect your show from defamation and copyright claims.

The short answer

Podcast insurance from CreatorSure is media liability for your show, plus Fight Back. Media liability pays for your defense when someone says an episode defamed them, used their music or invaded their privacy, including something a guest said. Fight Back helps pay for a lawyer when someone reposts your episodes or clips your show without permission.

You hit publish on every word your guests say. Podcaster insurance covers what comes back.

What it covers

What podcast insurance covers

Two halves, one quote. Media liability for when someone comes after you. Fight Back for when you need to go after them.

  • Defamation claims over what you or a guest said on air
  • Copyright claims over music beds, intros and clips
  • Privacy claims from people you discuss or record
  • Claims over your back catalog, not only new episodes
  • Fight Back for stolen episodes and unauthorized clips

The risks

Common claims against podcasters

  • Guests. A guest makes a false claim about someone and you publish it.
  • True crime. Naming suspects, families and victims draws defamation and privacy claims. True crime podcast insurance starts here.
  • Music. A song in your intro or a clip from a show you didn't license.
  • Recordings. Calls or interviews recorded without the right consent.
  • Your archive. Old episodes stay up, and so does the risk.

Fight Back

Fight Back coverage for stolen episodes or unauthorized clips

Most insurance waits for you to get sued. Fight Back helps pay for takedowns, demand letters and a lawyer to go after people who take your work. It's for theft you find after your policy starts.

Reuploaded episodes

Full episodes posted on other channels as someone else's show.

Clips without permission

Pages cutting your best moments and monetizing them.

Impersonators

Fake accounts using your show's name and art.

Lies about your show

False claims that cost you sponsors.

Proof of insurance

Proof of insurance for networks and sponsors

Podcast networks, sponsors, venues for live shows and distributors often ask for proof of coverage. Once you're covered, CreatorSure sends a certificate of insurance to anyone who needs it.

General liability

Why general liability usually doesn't cover podcast content

General liability, or GL, is the policy lots of small businesses buy. One part of it, Coverage B, is for personal and advertising injury. For an ordinary business, like a plumber, that part typically covers defamation claims.

A podcast is publishing and broadcasting, so that part is usually limited or excluded for your show. This is called the media exclusion, and GL doesn't address claims over your content the way media liability does.

Keep GL for physical accidents (CreatorSure covers general liability too and will place it alongside your media liability), and add media liability for your content.

Cost

Podcast insurance cost and quoting

There's no flat price, and we won't guess at one here. Your podcaster insurance cost depends on how many people listen, how the show earns money, your format and topics (true crime and interview shows are different from solo shows), the limits a network or sponsor asks for, and your claims history.

CreatorSure builds the quote around you, so you're not paying for extras you don't need. See what moves the price, then request a quote for a real number.

FAQ

Podcast insurance FAQ

Do podcasters need insurance?

If your show names real people, has guests, uses music or earns sponsor money, yes. Media liability covers claims over your episodes. Fight Back helps you go after people who steal them.

How much does podcast insurance cost?

It depends on your audience, revenue, format, topics and the limits you need. CreatorSure tailors a quote to your show. Request one to get your number.

Am I covered for what my guests say?

You're the publisher, so claims over a guest's words usually come to you. Media liability covers those claims. Tell us about your guests and format and CreatorSure will place a policy that covers them.

Is there true crime podcast insurance?

Yes. True crime shows carry more defamation and privacy risk, and CreatorSure will place a policy built for that.
