Broadcaster insurance

Broadcaster insurance: coverage for radio, TV, and streaming broadcasters.

The short answer

Broadcaster insurance from CreatorSure is media liability for what you put on air, plus Fight Back. Media liability pays for your defense when someone says a broadcast defamed them, used their work or invaded their privacy, including something a host, guest or caller said. Fight Back helps pay for a lawyer when someone rebroadcasts or reposts your programming without permission.

Everything you air is published. Broadcaster insurance covers what comes back.

What it covers

What broadcaster insurance covers

Two halves, one quote. Media liability for when someone comes after you. Fight Back for when you need to go after them.

  • Defamation claims over news, talk, commentary and call-in segments
  • Copyright claims over music, clips and footage you air
  • Privacy claims from people you record, film or name on air
  • Claims over your archive and on-demand library, not only live programming
  • Fight Back for rebroadcast programming, stolen clips and copycat stations

The risks

Real risks broadcasters face

  • Live air. A host, guest or caller says something false about a real person.
  • News and investigations. Naming people and businesses draws libel and privacy claims.
  • Music and footage. A track, clip or image you aired without the right license.
  • Ads you run. A sponsor's spot draws a claim, and the station that aired it gets named.
  • Simulcasts and streams. Programming that lives online long after it airs.

Fight Back

Fight Back: when someone takes your programming

Most insurance waits for you to get sued. Fight Back helps pay for takedowns, demand letters and a lawyer to go after people who take your work. It's for theft you find after your policy starts.

Rebroadcast without permission

Channels and pages airing your shows as their own.

Clips monetized by others

Accounts cutting your segments and earning from them.

Copycat names and logos

Someone using your call letters, show name or branding.

Lies about your station

False claims that cost you advertisers.

Proof of insurance

Proof of insurance for networks, syndicators and advertisers

Networks, syndicators, streaming platforms, advertisers and venues for live events often ask for proof of coverage. Once you're covered, CreatorSure sends a certificate of insurance to anyone who needs it.

General liability

Why general liability usually doesn't cover broadcast content

General liability, or GL, is the policy lots of small businesses buy. One part of it, Coverage B, is for personal and advertising injury. For an ordinary business, like a plumber, that part typically covers defamation claims.

Broadcasting is named in that exclusion, so that part is usually limited or excluded for a station or show. This is called the media exclusion, and GL doesn't address claims over your content the way media liability does.

Keep GL for physical accidents (CreatorSure covers general liability too and will place it alongside your media liability), and add media liability for your content.

Cost

Broadcaster insurance cost and quoting

There's no flat price, and we won't guess at one here. Your broadcaster insurance cost depends on your audience and reach, how you earn money, your formats (news, talk, call-in and live shows differ from music programming), the limits a network or advertiser asks for, and your claims history.

CreatorSure builds the quote around you, so you're not paying for extras you don't need. See what moves the price, then request a quote for a real number.

FAQ

Broadcaster insurance FAQ

Do broadcasters need media liability insurance?

Yes. Everything you air is published content, and claims over it name the station or show. Media liability covers those claims.

Does it cover radio, TV and streaming?

Yes. CreatorSure covers radio stations, TV and cable programming, internet radio and streaming broadcasters, and will place a policy that fits how you air.

Am I covered for what a guest or caller says?

You aired it, so claims over a guest's or caller's words usually come to you. Media liability covers those claims. Tell us about your formats and CreatorSure will place a policy that covers them.

Does it cover my archive and on-demand shows?

Yes. Tell CreatorSure about your library and your policy will cover it too. It doesn't cover a dispute you already know about.

How much does broadcaster insurance cost?

There is no flat price. It depends on your reach, formats and the limits you need. See what moves the price and request a quote.
